PostSubject: New Helm Wheel   Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:39 pm

Been out on the lake several times on Sugar Bee, and one thing that is not feeling like a perfect fit, is that 20" steering wheel. I am a big guy, and it gets lost in my hands. It works, but it looks like a toy boat wheel.

eBay is my friend, and I found an original Edsel helm wheel in a 30" size. I could have gone up to 38" with the room I have, but I think this will be a good compromise between using the wheel to sail, and walking around the wheel.

Current destroyer style Edsel wheels all have 5 spokes. Not a fan of that! I do like it when a pie is sliced five ways!

Sea Turtle?

What size wheel is that you have aboard? That looks to be a 30" or larger.

So, I ask the seller if he will do a buy it now and his price. He doubles his starting price of 100 bucks. I say yes. Pay him instantly. That is noon ish. His response? Ship it Monday.

I give him double what he was willing to sell it for, pay him instantly, and he is going to get around to shipping it next week.

Talk about hurry up and wait! Lol

Not an urgent part. I should have just bit the hundred bucks 10 seconds before the close of the auction. I would get it just as fast turns out.

Yesterday, I pulled the old wheel off (with a wheel puller, age had welded it in place, no wheel nut necessary) and put on the larger wheel.

Maybe this weekend I can try it out.

I am currently bleaching the fabric on the old one with laundry soap and OxyClean. I will keep both wheels on the boat, depending on the mood I am in, and what I want to sail with. The extra wheel, will have a display post in a prominent place on the boat, inside one of the cabins.
