I will be on my way to Washington in the early am to look at and hopefully bring home a boat.

Question: The bolt that holds the swing keel in place that is the one it pivots on. Is it visible and is one able to check to see if it is rusted or bent? The swing keel seems to be the big issue with these types of boats, and that is something I want to look at and have some idea what I am looking at. The owner says it has been completely restored?? I guess I will see.

Also why is not recommended to have the keel only supported by the cable? A lot of the lakes around my area have shallow areas and it would be bad news to have the bolt in the keel so it can't move.

Updates coming and photos if she becomes mine.

The cable does not keep the keel from slapping the end of the travel as you sail. As the boat heals, the water may partially fold in the keel, and then it returns with a clunk. That clunk, is the keel beating the fiberglass as it meets the end of the road.

I do not think it is 100% effective to examine the keel bolt, and the keel lock bolt without removing them. To do that, the keel should be up, in a supporting trailer, with the feel resting firmly on support boards.

I think the best solution is to replace the keel bolts when you get home, and then you know how old they are. With a label maker, put the bolt replace date next to the bolt.

If you have not removed a keel bolt before, and you do not do it correctly, the keel could move, shift, fall, resulting in a very hard keel bolt to put back in.

Look for signs of broken fiberglass, inside and outside the boat. Look for signs of repairs.

Look at the cable and see if it looks rusty, worn, or has breaks.

Travel safe, and post pics!

You are probably already on our way but just want to say hope the boat turns out to be what you are looking for.

I agree w/ Gary. Unless the owner has proof the keel bolt is fresh, go ahead and replace it so you know it's good.

As for running w/ the keel not bolted the only issue I can see is that if you did bump bottom that cable may become wedged when it goes slack as the keel rises. But I am NO expert in this area, just speculating and others that sail the CM21 will have better advice than I.

All the best, hope it works out for you, Ev.

I think if you expect to be rubbing the bottom, leave the swing bolt out. If you expect not to be hitting bottom, one should have that second keel bolt in place. Also, I think there is an issue of water getting in the boat unless both keel bolts are in place.

Bottom of this page (and every page) is the CM owners manual. Manual should cover that in detail.
