CM 30 inspection questions Empty
PostSubject: CM 30 inspection questions   CM 30 inspection questions EmptyTue Aug 07, 2012 1:07 pm

I am looking to inspect a boat here in Oregon. Gary seems to have found the posting of it which reads: 30' Clipper Marine sailboat w/trailer. 1975 Crealock design with fixed keel, wheel helm. Mainsail, jib and genoa.

We want/need a larger boat but after looking at many in the 30 foot range from other brands I keep coming back to the CM 25 and CM 30. The photos look great but shows the boats age.

  • Can you tell me some of the key places to inspect?

We intend to inspect the boat ourselves and make the decision the same day. If it feels sound and we don't see any potential issues we will launch it and pull our CM 21 out of the water.

I will take a rubber mallet and bang along the hull, walk the top deck, inspect the motor well, then see if there is any water ingress inside the cabinets.

  • Any key spots from CM 30 owners that you found during rebuilds or repairs to look for?

Well welcome to the site.

I would just make sure all the rigging is intact and working good. Sails, sails and oh don't forget to inspect sails. Look for mold, tears and if its the right sails.

Check the bilge for rot.

Make sure the tiller and rudder are in good order, mine needed sanding and reinforcing. It had cracks and some minor rot.

Check the motor.

Make sure if it has a swing keel that it works. Check for keel crush.

Take pictures and post here so we can sip beer and tell you what we notice. Good and bad.

I hope you get a good deal and as I am learning these boats are not too difficult to repair.

Good luck.

Interesting that you mention sails because the guy selling the boats states they do not seem to fit the mast. He states the mast is about 3 feet longer. Did they make a "Tall Rig" in 75'?

As I just stated this is a 75' so I can assume currently there is a 50/50 chance of Cali/Mexi manufacturing. I will call him to get the boat ID.

What about the wheel helm boats? Do the motors in these drop in motor wells just sit locked in place and all steering is done by the rudder?

Good questions. I am not completely sure since I am a CM 26 owner. I am sure others will chime in and help you out.

Tall rig was offered in 75 on a 32 , but exact details are sketchy. From what I have been able to put together, it is 2.5' longer, from 27.5' to 30' on the 32's.

What the tall rig would have been on a 30, I do not know. The part number is 498 for the regular mast on a CM30 at 27.5'

The engine was stationary for turns and used the rudder only, but it could lift out of the water to make sailing faster.

Did not get the boat someone else showed up and made the purchase before I could head down to see it on the weekend. Looking at another CM 30 in great shape in Portland at the marina. Other options on the table are a San Juan 30, C&C 30, or Pearson 30. I have to get photos of my CM 21 and get it for sale now.
