Just took the winch loose from the keel trunk. Glad I did. Just look at what's left of the cable. No more fun until I get this fixed.

wow that looks bad, good thing you opened it up. Just be very careful about replacing the cable its not as straight forward as you might think. I believe there is a pulley that can be lost if the bolt is simply removed. Not to mention the weight of the keel has to be dealt with.

I Think Floody is refering to the pivot bolt. It keeps the cable coming up straight into the riser, regardless on the angle of the keel. On mine it is just a bolt with a ferrule around it to act as crude pulley. You need to inspect it. Mine was worn into and my new cable only lasted two trips out. Check out Greg's CM 26 Keel Stuff

I'm borrowing a set of stands from a friend and pulling the boat off of the trailer. The keel needs scaled. faired and painted anyway. Going to replace the old roller with a new self centering on with sealed roller bearings. Also going to bore the pivot hole out to 1" and bush it down to 3/4" and replace the 1/2" pivot with a 3/4" stainless pivot. Also engineering a friction locking system to secure the keel in the down position to eliminate keel slap and allow the keel to release in event of contact with obstructions. This will eliminate the locking bolt without losing the security of a keel lock. Design will be similar to a disk brake.

The proposed locking system sounds interesting. Can't wait to see it.
