PostSubject: How powerful of an outboard would I need for a clipper 21?   Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:21 pm

Hi,

I just joined this list, I'm SERIOUSLY thinking of purchasing a used 21. The one I am looking at doesn't have an outboard motor, and the lake I would sail on I would need one as the boat ramp/slips are behind a breakwater and sailing in/out with my lack of skills wouldn't be a good idea. (smile)

My question is - how big of an outboard would I need just to move this into the lake to sail? it's a 1800 acre manmade lake, I wouldn't need the motor to get far.

regards...

Anything from 9.9 down. The smaller, the easier it is to work with. 3, 4, 6 would be just fine. If you are looking for speed, a 9.9 is going to be the largest you can use to get higher speeds out of her. Anything larger, and you hit Max hull speed anyway.

I hear the 21 are pretty sweet sailboats.

Welcome!

Mine have 6 HP on it and it does about 3 knots with it.

In a small lake you dont need much.

Cheers
