Ok all you sailing experts here is another question. I have found a 1979 Bayliner 180 that I can get for a trade. Trade is always good. I have looked at it and it seems to be in good shape. I think it would be a fun little boat for some of the small lakes around here. I layed the sails out in the yard and they look great. Bayliner had a thing for rainbow colors.

Is she a decent little daysailer? I am not a racer. The guy who owns it says it great to trawl behind it cause there is no noise.

Anyway looking for opinions. Also anyone know how to rig it? I've been looking on line, but no luck so far. There is no back stay. It has two on each side and the front, and the mast step is a plate with two bolts in it.

If you want opinions, I will give you mine.

Bayliner makes mostly powerboats and does them moderately well at best.
They took a stab at sailboats for a short run but they didn't sell well.
They also don't sail very well. They are slow.

Now with that said, they made a 25' aft cabin that is probably the roomiest 25' sailboat you can find. It sails like a turd but it's roomy.

So ask yourself what you want to do with it. If you are cruising around a lake and want to overnight comfortably but don't sail much then it's not a bad boat.

If you like the sailing part of the adventure then I would continue looking.

Diggs,

Thanks. My interest is cruising around and a lot of shallow water. I am rebuilding the CM21 and that will be my fun boat. The price is very right and I think it will go in the water as she sets. I see nothing that is in need of any repair that would prevent sailing her. I like the trade thing. I'm always willing to barter.

All of the rigging is un done and I would like to get help on what goes where. I think I can figure it out, but it would be nice to have a picture or diagram. The owner did not seem to be to sure. he said he always had help stepping the mast and rigging her.

Gary,

Yep from about 1970 to 1979 than they sold the line to US Yachts. They made boats from 18 to about 35 foot. It kinda started with the 70's gas crunch. They are not bad looking and are made for comfort.

Knew they made them but didn't know for that long. Friend of mine almost bought one on the east coast a few years back. The Dock Queens talked him out of it. Similar reputation to CMs as far as the yachties are concerned.

I hand people on other forums their ass all chewed up when they say anything negitive about Clipper Marine.

First thing I ask them is have they ever seen one, stepped aboard one or sailed one??? They always say no. Then I tell them their opinion or gossip is all they are going on, and they should raise their knowledge gathering abilities to help sway their misguided opinions. One guy I told off at Cruisers Forum is a moderator.

Clipper Marine had a Mission Statment, simple one really:

Build "The Worlds Finest Trailerable Cruising Sailboats" and do it with affordability in mind. Clipper Marine did not build a couple of boats and then go out of business. They did not build fifty or even a hunded, they built tens of thousands of fine sailboats and a great many are still alive and well today.

That is why I started this web site, to gain control of a site where the truth could be told about Clipper Marine.

William Crealock is known to have said in later years, he was very proud of Clipper Marine.

Bayliner is known for weak and unprotected plywood under carpet in the cockpit. I know this first hand as I own an arriva, a higher dollar Bayliner. So sometimes critisms are warranted. I just don't see any warranted critisms about CM's. They were built as Trailerable sailboats. I don't read anywhere they were built to race, built to circumnavigate the globe, built for hurricane force winds, or built to make teak suppliers weathly.

For most everyone that owns one, they are wonderful sailboats that are safe, fun, reliable, repairable when needed, and ultra long lasting going into 40 years of sailing to the boating community.

???

Who put the bee in your bonnet? I own a Clipper. I was wondering about a smaller sailboat to use on local lakes. Some of them are only a few acres and shallow. I thought the 18 footer with a flat bottom, small sail area, and shallow keel would fit the bill.

The 21 footer was the smallest of the Clipper line and weighs almost three times what this boat weighs. My keel weighs as much as the whole Bayliner boat.

The bee was just something Everett said, and he said nothing wrong, he just pointed out how people talk down CM's. Got me going.

I own an Arriva, I rather like them. Had it out on the lake several times this summer.

I have never figured out why some people look down on other peoples boats? I just don't understand it.
