PostSubject: winch and serial number?   Tue Dec 18, 2012 1:01 pm

Ahoy,

I am refurbishing our family's Clipper 21 and the winch has been stuck with the handle in for years. It's on the trailer. The crank is so tight it won't move either direction. Any thought on how to unstick it? And can anyone tell me where the hull serial number is located? Thank you!

Welcome!

That hull number, is on the stern (back) of the boat, on the starboard (right-hand) site towards the rub rail.

The handle may have a lever, releasing the handle from the wench. DW-40 that lever.

Once you get that off, there is a split ring on the top of the winch you can remove, which allows you to disassemble the winch for servicing.

Melinda,

If you winch is original you should be able to turn the crank counter clockwise and unscrew it. If it hasn't been used for some time it may be frozen. Break free or WD40 may help. Also a little heat on the screw threads may help. The handle tightness is all that controls the clutch. It is easy to clean and the only thing holding it together is a spring keeper on the left side(opposite the crank). The clutch must be real clean and dry. No lubricant of any kind. Is your center board part way down and resting on the trailer? If not it may be jamed in the trunk. I also have a 21 and have gone through the whole senerio.

Good luck, Russ

OOOOO

My mind was in this winch

Those of us with fixed keels, are blessed, and cursed. My lake is going dry, so a swing keel next summer would be an advantage.

Gary,

You don't know where I can get a handle for one of those. The previous owner said his was lost somewhere. New they are really proud of them. I was thinking of just using a ratchet handle and making a star fitting for it. I'm sure I could find something that would work. Harbor Freight here I come.

I was only guessing about the winch by the way. I have both. One for the keel the thing that looks like a trailer winch , and the ones like you have for the the head sails.

PostSubject: Thanks and a story   Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:35 am

On the winch, we had tried WD40 and counter cranking it but it is bound tight. We were thinking of semi-launching it off the trailer and seeing if the centerboard would release some tension but maybe that's not a good idea. Stop me before i screw it up!!!! All replies have been helpful. Thank you so much. So, part of our process was getting it registered. The hull number is not on the hull (thanks anyway, Gary!) but it was on the original (which we don't have) sail and we had an old picture of my dad sailing it so we finally figured that out yesterday. Then, in trying to register it, the California DMV computer system won't take two numbers and won't take a zero in front to space in for a third number. Our number is 75. They couldn't find it in their system for a few tries but then found it. So we have to mail in the form -- not submit it electronically. That's okay! My husband told me a story of when he had sailed on a Clipper 26 in the San Juans decades ago. His families' attorney shared offices with a CPA who had a picture of a sailboat in the office. Conversation ensued, they connected up and went sailing. The guy got intensely drunk, relying on my future husband to get them to port and though scuffing the bottom a few times, he did -- using an oily placemat map from a local restaurant he found on the cabin floor. AND, he docked at the port they had intended to dock at! My husband was young and from southern California and had sailed only on lakes before. There's a moral there somewhere: know how to sail or know your captain. Or both!

Thanks again!

The number on the sail, is your race number, given for events, and is issued by ??? in your area. That is usually a small number like 23 or 47 Many sails had them in the day. You see this number pictured in clipper literature.

The hull number is XXX XXXXX XXXX in length The first three letters are CLM, the next 5 is your hull number, and the last 4 is the date of manufacturer. Should be on the boat to the right of the rudder

As I don't have a drop keel, I am going to allow people that do, hopefully help you.

DMV had it buried in their system, we already had the long number sequence which is what I am calling what you are referring to and it really isn't on the boat. We looked and looked even prior to accessing this lovely forum. And DMV wanted more. DMV is probably wrong but they are accepting it (and only for $130!!! could have been worse) so I'm going with that. And my husband did know that the sail number is used for the race number but somewhere in the deep past, it was somehow registered with #75 -- maybe because there was no hull number to be found then either. Or some paperwork snafu.... My father had bought it at the SF Cow Palace in the sixties. Came home to the Central Valley from a business trip and said, hi honey, I bought us a sailboat! (well he ordered one and then later piled us four kids into the mint green Dodge station wagon to drive down to pick it up)

The very first ones were CM21's in 1969, so the evidence suggests. These were made in Sausalito, California, later moving to Santa Ana around 1972.

The only sailboats made at the original facility were the CM21's

The CM's were a new design. I was still in junior high school and the first time we went sailing it was on Whiskeytown Lake, which can get large deep troughs and there were! Huge waves (to us!) the boat diving into them straight on, water sometimes rolling over the bow and all the other boats headed back to their slips but my dad took my sister and I out. He'd read about how to sail in a book. Never been out before.... I'm more level headed than he was!

You can sometimes find a hull number inside the starboard quarter birth stamped on the INSIDE of the transom.

Numbers may sometimes be painted over, and not as easy to see as they were when the boat was new.

Also HINs were not required by law till Nov of '72. Our SC Seacraft was built in '72 so doesn't have one. DMV wouldn't do the 3 second Google search to verify what I was telling them. Took an extra month to get an on-water inspection by the FWC to verify so we could register.

And welcome Melinda, glad you found us. Cool

Hope you stay around and keep us posted on your adventures.

As for winch handles, check nautical flea markets/consignment shops. Maybe eBay.
