I am in the process of refitting the inside of my CM21. There are blocks of foam just laying in the rear portion of the inside. Does anyone know how much floatation the boat had, and was it all anchored somewhere? There is what appears to be urethane under the rear berths and sitting area. The loose foam blocks have me a bit puzzled though.

We have foam filled bags that are fiber glassed onto the rear of the boat above the area of the births, just above where your feet go.  The foam under all the plywood berths and V area are all flotation.  Probably can't have too much flotation when you need it.

Hi Jeff,
Yes floatation is a good thing. This stuff looks like the foam packing that you find around furniture or appliances and is just lying about. I am going to try and cut some of it to fit up under the seats in the cockpit area and use some silicone to hold it in. There is closed cell urethane under all the places to either sit or lay down.
Its a lot of work stripping everything out to the bare hull. This thing is full of dry rot so it must be done.
It has warmed a bit here in Idaho so I can work on her.

Hi Russ,
The foam under the berths and V area is the sprayed in expansion type on our boat.  It is a 1972.  Have you looked Christine's blog at "about Clipper marine 21" They gutted the boat and redid the interior.  She posts on the Trailer Sailor as well from time to time. I have pic from her completed boat if you want them.

Yes, it is positive floatation for safety in the event that your boat tries to sink on you. In theory, our boats are unsinkable with that foam, but I have no intentions of testing that theory!
