Mounting a radar reflector Empty
PostSubject: Mounting a radar reflector   Mounting a radar reflector EmptyTue Jul 29, 2014 12:41 am

Once again, I get to cross two major shipping channels.  I've seen huge freighters doing 17 knots through these channels and they are known for fog.  I decided it was time to become more visible so I bought a used radar reflector.  Now I'm a bit at a loss as to how I should mount it.  Any thoughts?

It depends on the type. Some mount to a mast, some to a spreader and some to the backstay.

Which type do you have?

No clue.  Looking closely at it, there are no holes for mounting anywhere.  Looks like someone took a couple sheets of heavy Aluminum and tack welded them into a an X.   Nice work...

I am assuming you mean this type, here is a manual for the more common brand:

Here is a video with good tips:

Nice references.  Yes, it looks like this except a bit heavier construction.  I'm going to see if I can run it along the back stay, maybe 4-5 feet below the top of the mast.   It should be clear of the sail there.

Thanks!

The tribal guy at the marina apologized about the $5 launching fee.  Not to worry as the parking is free.  Last years trip I launched at the state park for free and 5 nights of parking was $58.   I'll go shop at the tribal mart!

Found the reflector after I put up the mast...  Put it as high as I could up the back stay.   Didn't get hit by large container vessels.  No fog to be seen.
