Will the foam on a CM 26 really help when sinking?

I want to remove the foam inside the various places on my clipper so i can finish my restoration, and think that if it were to sink the foam in there now would not help much.

Have you removed the foam?

I wouldn't remove it. If you do remove it, then I would replace it with new foam after your remodel.

Just my $.02

Nothing feels better than a safe boat.

How will it make the boat safe? Considering the weight to foam floating ratio I cant see this small amount of foam doing anything.

Hum.

Some sailboats are floatation sailboats. MacGregor for example.

Being able to float while swamped with water is a real safety factor. If it were me, I would leave the foam. The 32's do not have that, and if swamped, they would be resting on the bottom in seconds.

There is foam in the rear, the bow and inside just about everywhere that is not a usable space. It's under the aft quarter births, under the v-birth and inside the seating in the cabin. You would be surprised how little foam can keep the boat afloat if you get swamped.

Again, just my opinion. If it were me, I would take that extra little step to maintain a safe boat.

I gave some thought into stuffing enough foam to make my CM32's float when swamped, but doing the math, as close as I can figure, my ballast is just too great to allow it to work.

Never been on board a CM 30 but can't imagine that enough foam could be placed to make 'em float when swamped. Anything more than the 21's would be pushing it in MHO.

My 26 has all of it's original foam throughout. Hope I never have to find out if it is actually enough to keep my fat a** afloat!
