Sail Plan For Next Season ? (adventurous)

My wife has shown me, she does not like sailing with whitecaps. That means I only have a crew to help on slow wind days.



So, if my days under sail are only going to be 5 to 10 MPH wind events, I am going to make the best of it.



Plans are under way to move the main mast on SB, to the mizzen mast, and move the main mast from Wondering Warrior to the main mast on SB.

That will give me 57 1/2 feet of mast from the deck, or about 70' from the water. Now, if I were going to be sailing this in blue water, it would never work. Too many wind loads on too many surfaces not designed to take the loads.

Because I only sail on a small lake, in low winds, this will give me an advantage of getting me more power with light winds. Should make it fun to sail on calm days, which is all I ever sail anyway.

Estimating about 400 SQ feet of sail, but it might be higher, depending on which sails I fly.

Still want to change the bow pulpit to a longer bow spirit, as well as add a sugar scoop around the rudder, but changing everything all at once is questionable. That would not let me see the changes from each change.

Think I will leave the bow and stern alone over the winter, and concentrate on the masts.

If I do get that boat with 70 feet of masts above the water into 15-20 mph winds, the boats name will change from Sugar Bee to Heelamonster.

That will definitely be an interesting mod. I have never seen it done.

How will your wife handle the "Heelamonster"?

Would it be easier to use a bigger jib sail? I have a 160% Genoa on my CM26 and it can add a lot of canvas for the light days. In fact it preforms better than other CM26 that are using a spinnaker.

Just a thought.

That mod will also negatively effect the balance of your boat. Your helm may become very difficult to handle. That sounds dangerous to me.

It does to me also! Other than about a grand in rigging and hours lost if it does not work, it can all be reverted to original.

I could hire a marine architect to run the numbers for me, but that would cost as much or more than the rigging to try it.

I might have to melt a little extra lead into my bilge.

Anyone here good at running a slide rule is more than welcome to advise me if it will work or what issues I will run into.

I have a history of "impossible" build jobs in my past. My daily driver is an advertising monster truck that is street leagal with a 17" lift and 24.5 semi wheels. I also ride a V8 motorcycle with over 400 hp.

Turning up the heat a little on a sailboat on a small calm lake seems like a pretty mild rebuild in comparison.

The tall mast was an upgrade available as an option of just 400 dollars. Because of that low cost, I believe the supports stayed the same, only the mast was taller by 2.5 feet.

It is possible I will leave the mizzen mast as it is. Adding 7.5 feet to that is possibly an over ballance issue, though the same sail could be flown and the extra mast could be used for flags.

Whatever I do, I will have fun doing it.

My aft cockpit 32 sailboat has sails in great condition. The sails on my aft cabin 32 are pretty ugly. The money I will save on sails alone will cover the custom rigging I will need, plus a bonus of roller furling front sail.

Hey Gary, I sail at branched oaks alot. I have seen your boat coming along and she is looking good. I was reading your post about the mast switch out etc. but if you are only planning on sailing when the wind is light, buy an assymetrical spinnaker, or a drifter, I think all that standing and running rigging reconfiguration will not get your desired results. Plus, you never know when a gust will come up or a summer t-storm squall. I have run into some big wind knocking me down on bare poles this summer when there was no wind at all forecast. With my asymm, I bought a sock and can douse the sail in two heartbeats, and then roll out the genoa to suit the wind . The assym with a sock is easy to fly, exhilarating when the wind strenghtens just a little, and beautiful to look at. It is really like a huge light- wind genoa. No pole needed, and so far I haven't run a tack line either, Just set it and trim it. We should hook up some time and do some sailing! I can crew on your boat if you need help and want to take her out in some wind! I am on the north dock and will have to pull out by the 15 of October. Let me know.

Love to go sailing anytime, your boat or mine. Oct 15 is fast upon us. I am in about inches of water, if we do not get rain, I may be forced to pull mine before you pull yours.

I really prefer my front sail to be kept on a roller furling, not a jib bag like I am doing now. To achieve moving the RF from the blue 32 on the grass to my sailboat in the water, I am going to switch lots of things.



I have a goal, of wonderful photographs of my sailboat, under 5 sails, spinnaker, jib, main, mule, mizzen. That is my goal.
