| Hello all.
A new question. Does anyone know what the kickup rudder for the CM21 might look like. Like maybe a picture of the design at the pivot point.
I find it rather funny that the boat will float in a foot of water, but the rudder needs almoat 3. I would like to build a kick up using the dimensions of what I have, but not sure on the pivot design.
Also what kind of material. Plywood sandwich, solid wood, or maybe even foam core on the fin part and then glassed on all.
I have built a number of foam core wings for my planes and even have a hot wire cutter somewhere.

| I have thought foam would be the answer but then realized that foam floats pretty good and may be difficult to sink the rudder down.
It was explained to me that the idea is to have a heavy rudder that sinks and kicks up when you hit something or that you can pull up when needed.
I would go with wood and glass over that.
I wish I had a pic but I have a 26 and no kick up.

| I was thinking foam and glass for the fin part. I could use a line to pull it down and there are quick releases on the market to let go if it hits something. Another option is hollow out a pocket towards the base and fill it full of lead bird shot. I don't think it would take much. I have done that on planes to that were way tail heavy. I just epoxied bird shot into an area to balance the thing. I think the other option would be a plywood sandwich. Much less likely to warp. | |

I has pics of the kickup versions of the rudder for several models. Just click on the link.

| Terry,
Thanks. I have the manual. I was hoping to find a photo of the way it was put together. I guess it doesn't really matter its my boat. I did find a real good article on one a guy made for a ptter 19. I think I will just lay my rudder down on a piece of cardboard and trace around it then maybe make a mock up to get the pivot right.
More stuff to work on. I am at a stand still on the relocating the winch. Try and find fiberglass tape in a small farming town. Its internet mail time so I wait.

| If the rudder is just a wood core covered in fiberglass, why the need of a winch to retrieve it? You would need a winch to keep it deployed in the moving water.
On the Macs, the kick up rugger is cast iron, and weighs 660 pounds. For that application, I see the need for a winch.
What is the weight of the factory kick up rudders?

| Gary,
I am off on another tangent now. I think I have my keel winch problem fixed, but working on a kickup rudder for the boat. It seems that the boat with the keel up only draws about a foot of water, but the rudder needs almost three. That makes it rather difficult to go ashore where there is not a sharp drop off.
Thus the plan to build a kickup rudder.
I was hoping someone might have a photo of what Clipper's looked like at the area of the pivot. I have found some internet sites that give some good info so now I am off to build a rudder.
