In sorting out the absence of facts about Clipper Marine sailboats of 40 years ago, it is often a case of scratching your head and wondering about stuff without any proof, because so many trails have gone cold.
One thing I can now prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, (because I own both examples along with documentation) is Clipper Marine offered up a ocean going Yacht they called "TALL RIG"
The mast, boom and supporting structures were greatly beefed up. I would say 50% stronger at least.
The mast on a standard 30 and 32 foot CM were 27 feet tall. The mast on a tall rig was 30 feet tall, or 10% taller.
I show as proof that a Tall Rig was an option at Clipper Marine, photos as well as original documents.
The reddish color photo, enlarge it on your computer screen, and get out a ruler and measure it. By comparison, the boat length is 32 feet.
Notice the beefed up cathedral below the heavier mast. This cathedral is many times heavier than the standard one found on the 27' mast, and is in two pieces, one piece riveted to the bottom of the mast, that stays attached all the time, mast up or down. The bottom of the Tall Rig mast is not open as it is on the regular mast.
The boom is twice as heavy on the Tall Rig as it was on the standard rig. (I will post pics of that later)
The final picture in this series is a blow up of a brochure offered by Clipper Marine in 1976. It clearly shows as Option #13 a Tall Rig and the price is $400 extra.
