| Currently, I have a low end ($100.00) Lowrance fish/depth finder with the transducer mounted on the transom. I got the fish finder because I want to see the lay of the bottom as I'm sailing, not just the depth. I know that you can epoxy the transducer to the the hull inside and still get a reading. A buddy did this in his sailboat. I've been doing some research and watching YouTube videos on the subject. I saw a couple of people installing through the hull types, but I don't want to do mine that way. Besides, I have the skimmer type transducer. That type will work if I glue it to the hull without drilling a hole. I need to find the right place. I think it will work in the stowage compartment in the V birth, but I concerned about the thickness of the fiberglass. Today I called Lowrance Tech Support and talked to a really nice man. He said; he grew up on the California Coast and has been on the water all his life. He under stood my goal and he informed me that I need to be sure that the hull was no thicker than a half inch where I want to put the transducer. Which leads me to ask if anyone knows where I can find out. One of the videos I watched today was about a kit that Humming Bird finder Mfg. offers to inner hull removable exterior style transducer mounting system, utilizing a type marine grease as the contact medium and strapped it down with a Velcro strap. The grease works the same way that gel they use with an ultrasound sound transducer. Go to: YouTube and type in KayakFishLanier . He will give a demonstration and tell you can order a kit. If any of you know first hand or otherwise hull thicknesses, please let me know. Thanks, Chip | |

| If I was looking for thin sections of hull, I'd try about a foot forward of the transom. Once you get forward of the cockpit, you are looking at the top of a false bottom at least up to the bulkhead. It MAY be thinner forward of that but you also want to think about the cable run back to the cockpit. It would be nice to have it mounted about 15' in front of the bow but it is not the most practical place. | |

| I would agree about the rear of the boat. I mounted my thru hull transducer under the cockpit next to the bilge and the hull there is just over 1/4" thick on a 26 but nowhere near 1/2".
I am not sure how thick the hull is near the bow as I have yet to drill a hole in that part of my boat but towards the front, you are more likely to meet the "false bilge" and that will give you all kinds of complications with your transducer. | |
